教育公平：equality of education opportunity, equal access to
Nowadays, one of the pressing problems facing our nation today is inequality of education opportunity in some rural areas, which has aroused much public concern.
There are to my mind, plenty of contributing causes, among which, the f
ollowing ones are particularly worth mentioning. First and foremost, the distribution of resources is unbalanced between rural and urban schools. That is to say, urban students have more access to advanced teaching facilities. Besides, educational loans for poor students are far from enough. As a matter of fact, the high tuition fees are heavy burdens on millions of low-income families. Hence, students from poor families are deprived of the right to go to universities because of the high tuition fees.
To tackle this problem, the crucial task of our society is to invest more in education, especially in rural schools. Only when educational equity comes true, will our society be more harmonious.
In order to promote the equality of education, China has invested 36 billion
Yuan to improve the educational facilities in rural areas and to strengthen rural compulsory education in the Midwest. The funds are used to improve teaching facilities and purchase books, which benefit more than 160,000 primary and secondary schools. The funds are also used to purchase musical instruments and painting tools, which enable children from rural and mountainous areas to have music and painting classes as children from coastal cities do. And those students who have transferred to city schools for better education are now moving back to attend local rural schools.
